5 Ways to Step Up your Style on a College Budget

It’s mid-October and we’re already thinking about the parties, soirees, dorm room Thanksgivings and ugly Christmas sweater parties (our fave!) that come with the holiday season. But when you’re on a college budget, stepping up your style game can be difficult on a budget. So here’s some penny-pinching secrets to keeping it classy throughout the holiday season and looking like a million bucks without spending a dime!

The 70/30 Rule

This is the perfect ratio for pulling it together. The secret is to wear 70 percent nicer clothing with 30 percent of your trendy, F21 sale rack accessories and goods. So go ahead and wear your turban, feathers or leopard flats, but pair it with a classic a-line skirt or cardigan to balance it out.

Layer, Layer, Layer

This is the secret all stylists use, and with those chilly walks across campus will keep you looking like a rock star and staying warm. Layers add more depth to basic pieces, so instead of just wearing your v-neck and cardigan, try adding a blazer and scarf or button down to play up your style. Don’t forget to roll up your cuffs and push up sleeves to show off your layers.

Go Deep

Deeper tones hide imperfections better than pastels or brights. Stick with burgundy, eggplant, navy, black and grey and add in your color in doses. For instance, wear bright cami under dark sweater or your “cheaper” tops with rich layers.

Costume Jewelry

If you’re in a college town, odds are you have access to some pretty awesome imposters. A stylish brooch, great set of pearls or turquoise ring can add instant style to an outfit, and if you’re discerning, no one will care if your pearls are a fake. Kick up your wardrobe with an awesome brooch or big ring – it’s all about the accessories.

Lipstick

Take a cue from celebs on this one: a red pucker can make anything look glamorous.
